August always ends the same way.
One minute you’re watching the sun disappear behind the sea with an aperitivo in hand. The next, you’re standing in a supermarket queue wondering where summer went.
It’s over in a flash.
For Italians, September has always been the real beginning of the year. Long before January became synonymous with resolutions, September marked the return to routine. Schools reopened. Offices filled again. Factories restarted. Cities came back to life. The ancient rhythm of Italy has never really followed the calendar.
It follows the seasons.
And September is the season of reality.
The romance of Ferragosto is replaced by calendars full of meetings, inboxes overflowing with emails and a diary that suddenly seems impossible to manage. It’s as though the universe sends you the bill for taking August off.
Back to work. Back to school. Back to deadlines. Back to reality.
It arrives with surprising force.
Fashion understands this better than most. September is when the industry truly comes alive. New collections arrive, editorial calendars reset, trade fairs open their doors and Milan once again becomes the world’s runway. Buyers return with fresh budgets, brands unveil new strategies and designers reveal the ideas they quietly shaped while everyone else appeared to be doing nothing.
Except they weren’t. Summer has always been a season of observation. The best ideas rarely arrive in boardrooms. They emerge while walking along a coastline, wandering through a village or sharing an unhurried dinner with family and friends.
Creativity wears linen. Execution wears tailoring. September is where the two finally meet.
Yet perhaps we’ve misunderstood the purpose of August. We often spend the month trying to slow down, only to spend September trying to catch up—as if rest creates a debt that productivity must repay. It doesn’t. The pause wasn’t an interruption. It was preparation. The months ahead will demand energy, resilience and optimism. From Fashion Weeks and international trade fairs to business launches, school runs and new projects, the pace accelerates almost overnight.
So before the season gathers full speed, take one last deep breath of summer. Keep a little of August with you. The slower lunch. The evening walk. The conversation without looking at your phone. The time spent with family. Because the goal isn’t to return exhausted.
It’s to return refreshed. Relaxed. Comfortable in your own pace. Ready to embrace everything the new season has to offer. After all, the best way to face September isn’t by making up for August. It’s by letting August remind us how to live while we work.
Here’s to a season of fresh ideas, renewed energy and exciting opportunities.
Welcome back.
Agosto finisce sempre allo stesso modo.
Bentornati.
